Day 142-150 - St. Ignace to Harbor Springs

45° 25' 43" N  84° 59' 1" W – Harbor Springs

An unexpectedly rough day on Lake Michigan. It was a beautiful start with blue, blue skies and a light wind.  We headed under Mackinaw Bridge as the wind was picking up but I held on tight and got some beautiful shots of the going under the bridge.  The bridge is nearly 5 miles long and joins the Upper and Lower peninsulas of Michigan and is the longest suspension bridge in the northern hemisphere.

Here we go...

Farewell Mackinaw Bridge

Once passed the bridge the winds picked up strength and the lake became pretty rough.  Even our TV, that is anchored to the wall, tried to fall over.  Our navigation system chose that time to quit working on the bridge so Bob carefully came down stairs to steer from the lower helm.  Everything seemed to be going well until we were about 30 minutes from the marina where the boat would stay while we drove to see my niece and her family in Minnesota.  Bob decided to go back up to the fly bridge as it would be easier to dock from there.  A few minutes later I heard a huge thud and flew out the door to see Bob leaning over the edge of the fly bridge to tell me he was bleeding - as blood is dripping from his head!  He'd tripped and fallen over the life raft - we have always disliked the location of the raft.  I put an ice pack on his head and he went back upstairs to pull us into the marina.  We immediately got our rental car and drove to the emergency room where they put 4 staples in his head.  Thank goodness there was no concussion.

We spent Wednesday doing laundry, packing, and going over the work list with the mechanics to do while we are gone.  I took a few walks to get pictures of this pretty town.  It is the wealthiest town in Michigan.

 Flowers every where.

The wealth is not limited to houses...

And lest you think pink flamingos are only in YOUR town - see what arrived on the bow of this boat!

We spent 5 days on our trip to Minnesota where we had an awesome time with April, Jonathan, and their four younguns'.  Lake Superior was rough water on our drive up and smooth and beautiful on our drive back.  We are very glad we decided to park the boat and drive up as nice as it would have been to have our boat with us.

We crossed over the Mackinaw Bridge and decided it is much more impressive going under!

As this was our first time leaving the boat all alone for an extended time, we were very grateful to get back home to her and find her in one piece.  Today Bob had his staples removed, we went grocery shopping, and then more laundry getting ready to leave -- hopefully tomorrow (the marine technicians still have one unfinished task).

Docked at Irish Boat Works - Harbor Springs, MI  8/1 - /8/9
