Day 68 - Delaware Bay

Current Position: 38° 57' 00" N 74° 53' 00" W

The morning dawned with no fog and no rain!!!  There were 8 of us that left the marina in a parade.  3 of us left at 8 (we are the slow ones).  2 more shortly behind us and quickly passed us.  Then three more that eventually passed us.  The bay couldn't have been nicer at the beginning.  The current was against us at first so we went a little slower but there was almost no waves.  The farther we went the more the waves picked up but never beyond uncomfortable and the current changed to go with us so we picked up speed.  Altho it was bumpy out, I could still go below (carefully and holding on) to make lunch.  It was a long day with NO rain :) and very little commercial traffic.  We saw some neat lighthouses - this was my favorite:  Ship John Shoal Lighthouse.  A ship named John grounded on the shoal here and was lost, but not before the crew and cargo was saved.

We arrived at Cape May canal right before our friends Jonathon & Rosa on their little 22 ft C-Dory.  They traveled 83 miles in 5 hours.  We traveled 53 miles in 7 1/2 hours.

The canal into Cape May has some pretty, sandy beaches with trees right down to the beach.

We are anchored in front of the Coast Guard station, too far and too cold to dinghy over to the other Loopers. Lots and lots of them here waiting for the weather window to jump into the ocean to go north.  We are taking the long, winding path up the New Jersey ICW (intra-coastal waterway).  Very shallow and tricky but no big waves!

Anchored at Cape May Coast Guard Station
